Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What are the planning phase, structural analysis and design of reinforced concrete construction?

A1: Planning phase of reinforced concrete construction include

  • The planning of layout of structure is carried out by an Architecture/a planner
  • Functional requirement
  • Aesthetic requirement
  • Budgetary requirement

Structural analysis and design include

  • To bring the architect concept into being, selection of most appropriate structural system is important
  • Loads on structure need to be estimated
  • Structural analysis for estimation of stresses
  • Actual proportion for safety and serviceability for structural design which includes size and reinforcement etc
  • Drawing submission

Q2: What is reinforced steel?

A2: Reinforced steel is the steel embedded in concrete. Is is usually manufactured under controlled conditions in factories. Reinforced steel may effectively take up the tension that induced due to,

  • direct tension
  • flexural tension
  • environmental effect
  • diagonal tension

Q3: What is characteristic strength?

A3: The strength of the material below which not more than 5% result are expected to fall is called as characteristic strength. It is subjected to considerable variation in its strength and the variation in concrete is expressed in terms of coefficient of variation and/or standard deviation.

Q4: What is the purpose of utilising reinforced cement concrete?

A4: Reinforced cement concrete has its own advantages. Some of them are,

  • It prevents the shrinkage and temperature along with increase in the strength
  • Strength of concrete is about one-tenth of its compressive strength
  • Some amount of reinforcement is needed to improve the tensile strength of concrete which takes the tensile stress developed
  • Hence, to carry all the developed tensile stress, reinforcing steel is added in the tension zone.
